CCI Students

In 1980, Gil Levin, founder and director of the Cape Cod Institute, made a dream come true by combining two loves,
psychology and the Outer Cape, to create the school. The CCI, which has averaged 30 seminars a summer for most
of its 37 years (that's over 1000 courses, many of which have had unique subjects) gives people in the fields of mental
health and social services a chance do more than gain needed credits. It's also a melting pot of professionals from
around the world who meet to study the same issue and for some a chance to to bring the family along on vacation to a
special area.

The Outer Cape isn't just beaches and shopping. There's no place like it. You can watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean and set beneath the waters of that same ocean at the less vast Cape Cod Bay, separated by the curve of the Cape, and just 3 miles away. Cape Cod is the only single-source aquifer in this hemisphere, its only fresh water coming under the ocean from Maine. The Outer Cape, from Orleans through Provincetown, is where the first transcontinental telegraph message was sent, the flat-bottomed paper bag was invented, the first bananas were imported, and the Pilgrims first landed and lived for a winter before moving to Plymouth,
all on a sand bar an average of 3 miles wide and less than 50 miles long.

Its towns are laid out like a string of sausages, long and narrow, touching only one other town at each end and having
the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean on the east and Cape Cod Bay on the west. It is divided lengthwise by our only highway,
Route 6. Everything east of that road is referred to as oceanside, and to the west is bayside, regardless of distance to
water. Route 6 serves a dual purpose. While it acts in the usual manner of a highway to carry people for longer distances,
it also serves the towns as a commercial road. Because of the businesses and homes located along it, the speed limit varies.
In Eastham, the only town in which it is also the town's Main Street, the speed limit is 40 mph the entire length of the town.

Nauset Regional High School is at the north end of Eastham, close to the Eastham/Wellfleet town line and about a mile from
the highway. Either town is suitable for renting to attend a seminar. Traffic can be heavy and slow when the weather's not
suitable for beaching. Staying any further could mean a long, slow commute. Roads out here are rural. The Rail Trail, a state-
maintained paved bike path which runs through all or part of 6 towns, comes to within a mile of the high school and is used by
some as an alternative to driving to class.

The school is at the beginning of Cable Rd. in North Eastham. This is just inside the border of the Cape Cod National
Seashore (CCNS), whose boundaries extend to include all the area within a mile of the ocean coastline. It is aproximately
9/10 mile from the school to Nauset Light Beach on the Atlantic Ocean, and Nauset Light, a working lighthouse.
